The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is argued to be a representative example of early 20th century three-decker construction in University Park, built when factory workers, many of them immigrants, were drawn to the area's industries. It is also described as one of the best-preserved and well-detailed Queen Anne style three-deckers in the neighborhood.","narrative":"Built around 1908 at 22 Kilby Street in Worcester's University Park neighborhood, this three-decker is a well-preserved example of Queen Anne style multifamily housing. It has a side-hall plan, clapboard siding, a hip roof with a small gable dormer, and an asymmetrical facade with a recessed three-tier porch beside a projecting three-story bay window. Turned posts, brackets, spindle balustrades and a bracketed cornice supply the detail. It was among the last Queen Anne three-deckers built in the area and anchors a corridor of similar buildings along Beacon Street. The house belongs to a cluster erected to house families of workers in industries along the Boston and Albany Railroad corridor. Its earliest known owner, Ellen M. Smith, held four neighboring three-deckers, and later owners included the proprietors of a bottle company and a realtor. Tenants over the decades were machinists, weavers, a fireman and other workers. It was listed for its local significance in architecture and community development.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is listed as excellent with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.861685-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/7933/63793381/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002409.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002409/d7706de32e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002409/d7706de32e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EllenMSmithThreeDecker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EllenMSmithThreeDecker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793381","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_M._Smith_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5364922"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/smith-ellen-m-three-decker-89002409/"}
