It is clad in wood clapboard and shingle and is one of a row of similar houses on a steep hillslope.","why_significant":"The nomination links the house to the early Irish working-class residential growth of Grafton Hill's western slope in the late 19th century. It also calls the house an unusually intact, well-detailed example of early Queen Anne three-decker design in the earliest core of three-decker development in the Grafton Hill/Vernon Hill area. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1894 at 50 Dorchester Street in Worcester, this three-decker was part of a row of similar houses on the lower western slope of Grafton Hill. It reflects the 1890s move of many Irish families out of crowded neighborhoods near downtown into new three-decker districts on the East Side hills. The first known owner, Patrick J. McGrath, was a carpenter who lived in the building, and his family owned and occupied it through 1910. Early tenants included a laborer, a stone cutter and a teacher. Architecturally, the house is an early Queen Anne example, with a hip roof, side-hall plan, side-wall jog and a three-story projecting bay window. Its full-length first-floor porch keeps turned posts, a ball-and-spindle frieze and decorative brackets, and heavy brackets also mark the roofline. Wood clapboard covers the walls, with a shingle band between the second and third stories. It remains in residential use and in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Recorded as in good condition, with present use residential; the porch balustrade spindles have been replaced.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.515593-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7933/63793399/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002407.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002407/638b2eaed1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002407/638b2eaed1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Patrick_McGrath_3_Decker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Patrick_McGrath_3_Decker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793399","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_McGrath_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7147159"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/mcgrath-patrick-three-decker-89002407/"}
