The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is a rare survival of the earliest phase of three-decker development in a working-class and middle-class neighborhood northwest of downtown Worcester. It is also one of the few well-preserved examples of early Queen Anne three-decker design, with details that were unusual and not widely used in the 1890s building boom.","narrative":"Built by 1888 at 8 Dix Street in Worcester, this three-decker is an early example of a housing type that came to define the city's working neighborhoods. It stands in an area northwest of downtown that was settled by Irish and other working-class and white-collar residents within walking distance of central businesses and factories. The first known owner, John Riordan, was a bookkeeper who lived in the house and rented to tenants including a woodturner, a clerk and a stenographer. The house shows the first, experimental phase of local Queen Anne three-decker design. It has a side-hall plan and hip roof, but also heavy bevelled porch posts with solid brackets, a projecting three-story square bay beside the entry, a second square bay on the side wall, and large decorative cornice brackets. Wood clapboard covers the walls, with a shingle band between the second and third stories. Its survival and well-preserved details earned recognition for local significance in community development and architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; present use is residential, the same as its original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.091667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/7934/63793405/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002405.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002405/cf35360368-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002405/cf35360368-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Riordan_Three-Decker,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Riordan_Three-Decker,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793405","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Riordan_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6254975"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/riordan-john-three-decker-89002405/"}
