It is part of the Worcester Three-Deckers multiple resource area.","why_significant":"It is a representative example of the three-deckers built as Worcester's Piedmont neighborhood expanded westward in the late 19th century into an ethnic, working-class, multi-family district. It is also an unusually finely detailed local example of Queen Anne elements in three-decker construction. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1894 at 80 Dewey Street in Worcester, this three-decker housed multiple families at the western edge of a working-class district that grew west of downtown in the late 19th century. Dewey Street saw concentrated three-decker construction amid cottages, multi-family houses and light industry. The first known owner was Thomas Lumb, a saloon keeper, and early tenants included a clerk, a salesman and a shoemaker. The wood-framed building has clapboard siding with shingle bands between stories, a side-hall plan and a shallow hip roof with a wide cornice. Unusually ornate brackets, a recessed three-tier porch with turned posts and spindle friezes, a three-story bay window and rope-molded window caps give it Queen Anne character. It is considered well preserved, with only the porch balustrades replaced. It was listed as a representative example of Worcester's late-century three-decker development and for its finely detailed design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as very good, and the building is in residential use. The only major alteration noted is replacement of the porch balustrades.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.55604-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/95/7933/63793395/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002403.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002403/ff9123c3bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002403/ff9123c3bf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_ThomasLumbThreeDecker_80DeweyStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_ThomasLumbThreeDecker_80DeweyStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793395","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Lumb_Three-Decker_(Dewey_Street)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7791971"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/lumb-thomas-three-decker-89002403/"}
