It sits on a steep hillslope in a late 19th-century urban neighborhood.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a representative example of early three-decker construction in the Belmont Street area, then developing as a Scandinavian working-class neighborhood. It is also an unusually well-preserved example of Queen Anne three-decker design from the 1890s. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1894 on the eastern end of Catharine Street in Worcester, this three-decker is a wood-frame Queen Anne style house clad in clapboard and cut shingle. It has a hip roof, a side-hall plan, a single-story entry porch with turned posts, and a projecting three-story bay window. Bracketed cornice details, 2/2 windows with bracketed crowns, and geometric stained glass in the front parlor side windows add to its character. The porch has lost its brackets and balustrade, but the building is otherwise well preserved. The house reflects the Belmont Street neighborhood, where Swedish, Swede-Finn and Finnish immigrant families lived, and where many residents worked at the nearby North Works of the Washburn and Moen Company or other metalworking firms. The first owner was Rodney H. Davis, a draftsman who apparently did not live there. Early tenants included a carver, a motorman, a laborer and wiredrawers. It was listed for its architecture and its link to neighborhood development.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne style Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as good. The porch balustrade and brackets were removed, possibly in the mid-20th century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.700554-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/45/7933/63793345/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002398.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002398/a90caeb644-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002398/a90caeb644-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rodney_Davis_3_Decker.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rodney_Davis_3_Decker.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793345","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Davis_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7356900"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/davis-rodney-three-decker-89002398/"}
