The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant for its link to the Island neighborhood's growth as a multi-family, working-class district during the influx of Polish and Lithuanian families in the early 20th century. It is also an unusually well-preserved, representative example of Colonial Revival three-decker construction.","narrative":"Built around 1918 at 25 Canton Street in Worcester, this three-decker is part of a row of similar houses facing Crompton Park, one of two working-class parks the city created on the East Side in 1886. It stands in the last section of the Island neighborhood to be developed. The wood-clapboard building has wide shingle bands between stories, a side-hall plan, a three-tier porch with Doric columns, a three-story round bay window, and a hip roof with decorative cornice brackets. The first known owner, John P. Troupes, ran a billiard hall. By the early 1920s the formerly Irish-dominated district was increasingly occupied by Polish and Lithuanian families, and the house was owned by a wireworker who lived there with tenants including a steamfitter, a cook and a baker. It was listed for its association with the neighborhood's working-class development and as a well-preserved Colonial Revival three-decker with no recorded alterations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as very good with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.269689-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7932/63793299/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002394.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002394/9bdf9f5c22-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002394/9bdf9f5c22-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:25_Canton_Street,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:25_Canton_Street,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793299","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Troupes_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6261307"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/troupes-john-three-decker-89002394/"}
