The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is argued to represent the multi-family housing built in the ethnic, working-class Piedmont neighborhood west of downtown Worcester in the late 19th century. It is also considered an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed local example of Queen Anne three-decker design. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1892 at 183 Austin Street, this wood-clapboard three-decker reflects the housing that filled Worcester's low-lying Piedmont area west of downtown in the late 19th century. It follows the side-hall plan with a side-wall jog and has a hip roof, a three-tier porch with lathe-turned posts, cut brackets and spindle friezes, and a three-story angled bay window. Simple bracketed window caps and roof cornice brackets add detail, and the building has seen no major alterations. Its earliest known owner was Edwin E. Johnson, a machinist who lived here for over a decade and by 1900 ran his own machine shop. Tenants over the years included salesmen, clerks, printers, telegraphers and shoeworkers. By the 1920s and 1930s the neighborhood had become a focus of Worcester's Armenian community. The house was recognized as a representative working-class multi-family residence and a well-preserved local example of Queen Anne three-decker design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, with no major alterations and no outbuildings; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.233023-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7933/63793391/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002389.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002389/5f21488d04-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002389/5f21488d04-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_Johnson_3_Decker_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_Johnson_3_Decker_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793391","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Johnson_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5346567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/johnson-edwin-three-decker-89002389/"}
