It is also an unusually well-preserved and well-detailed example of the gambrel-roof Colonial Revival three-decker. The nomination cites Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1910, this three-decker at 2 Harlow Street in Worcester is a gambrel-roofed example of Colonial Revival housing, set in a row of three-deckers opposite Saint Bernard Church. It has a side-hall plan, wood clapboard siding, shingled gables, a two-tier entry porch with square posts and open balustrades, and a shallow two-story bay window. Double cross-gable dormers project from the side roof slopes, and modillion blocks sit under the cornice. Lars M. Petterson, a contractor who owned more than a dozen buildings in the Lincoln Street and Greendale neighborhoods, developed about six houses in the Harlow Street area and owned this one into the early 1920s. Early residents included a bookkeeper, a draughtsman and a salesman, reflecting the white-collar and skilled-craft households of this middle-class streetcar suburb. By 1924 Fred Gurney, a yard superintendent, owned and lived here. It was listed for its intact design and its place in the neighborhood's early twentieth-century growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"possibly Lars Petterson","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Gambrel) Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as very good, with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.058847-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/7932/63793261/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002368.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002368/04c6c61ab9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002368/04c6c61ab9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_LarsPettersonFredGurneyThreeDecker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_LarsPettersonFredGurneyThreeDecker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793261","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lars_Petterson-Fred_Gurney_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715662"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/petterson-lars-fred-gurney-three-decker-89002368/"}
