It is also remarkably well preserved and ranks among the finest Colonial Revival three-deckers in Worcester. It is significant at the local level under criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1910 at 21 Freeland Street in Worcester's Main South neighborhood, this wood-clapboard three-decker was designed to appeal to professional and business families looking for rental housing in a fashionable district. It follows the typical side-hall plan but is larger than average. Its asymmetrical facade has a projecting two-tier porch with Tuscan columns, a three-story bay window, a shallow hip roof with small pedimented gables, and modillion blocks under the wide cornice. Elliptical and semi-circular lights decorate the gables. The first owner, John B. McDermott, a carpenter, lived in the house, and his family stayed through 1930. Early tenants included a bookkeeper, a store assistant manager, a manager and a high school teacher. The rest of Freeland Street was later developed with far more modest three-deckers. The house is valued for its remarkable preservation and for being one of the finest Colonial Revival three-deckers in the city.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as excellent with no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.734899-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/7932/63793287/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002366.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002366/113ec86fc2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002366/113ec86fc2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_JohnBMcDermottThreeDecker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WorcesterMA_JohnBMcDermottThreeDecker.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793287","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._McDermott_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6220047"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/mcdermott-john-b-three-decker-89002366/"}
