The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is a representative example of early 20th century three-decker construction in the Main South area, built as employment opportunities expanded in the neighborhood and the city. It is also unusually well preserved and well detailed, with an atypical mix of Stick and Queen Anne style features. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1901 at 79 Florence Street in Worcester, this three-decker was part of scattered multi-family development in the Florence-Maywood Street area, where streetcar suburbs grew along the western edge of the fashionable Woodland Street district. Levi Flagg, a realtor who owned sixteen other buildings in the city, first held it as a rental property. Later owners included another local realtor and, by 1928, a machinist who lived in the building. Early tenants worked as wireworkers, a blacksmith and a clerk. The house keeps the characteristic side-hall plan but has an asymmetrical three-bay facade more typical of earlier three-deckers. Wood clapboard, a hip roof with paired brackets, a full-length Stick style porch and two side bay windows rising three stories give it unusually rich ornament. Its sash windows have bracketed hoods with saw-tooth molding. It remains in good condition, with no recorded alterations, and is valued as a well-preserved example of local working-class rental housing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick/Queen Anne style Three-Decker","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in good condition with no major alterations; present use is residential, the same as its original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.80115-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7934/63793419/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002362.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002362/8462e215c3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002362/8462e215c3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:79_Florence_St,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:79_Florence_St,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793419","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Flagg_Three-Decker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6535403"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/flagg-levi-three-decker-89002362/"}
