It also preserves a well-kept range of typical late Colonial Revival and Craftsman three-decker styles. It was judged significant at the local level under criteria A and C.","narrative":"View Street, on the steep western slope of Vernon Hill in Worcester, holds a small district of 11 three-decker houses and six garages built between about 1916 and 1930. The houses reflect the last major phase of three-decker construction on the hill. Most have gable roofs, two have gambrel roofs and one has a hip roof. Common features include recessed three-tier porches, triple windows, 6/1 sash, and cladding of wood shingle and clapboard. Nine of the 11 houses contribute to the district; 9 and 16 View Street do not because of modern siding. The streets below Vernon Street drew skilled blue-collar and white-collar families of Irish, Swedish, Polish, Lithuanian and Jewish background, attracted by city views and streetcar access to downtown jobs. Early owners included a salesman, a woodworker, a foreman and several metal workers. The district was recognized for its local importance in working-class housing and its well-preserved mix of three-decker styles.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1916-1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival/Craftsman three-deckers","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; general condition is described as poor to excellent. Two three-deckers (9 and 16 View Street) are noncontributing because modern siding has compromised their integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.918702-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7933/63793319/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002361.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002361/7661d5c6b8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002361/7661d5c6b8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:View_St_Historic_District.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:View_St_Historic_District.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793319","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View_Street_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7928756"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/view-street-historic-district-89002361/"}
