It holds 40 three-decker houses, garages, and a Deedy Square sign and plaque, mostly built between 1910 and 1930.","why_significant":"The district is presented as a representative example of the three-decker subdivisions that spread across Vernon Hill in the early 20th century and drew a mix of East Side ethnic families. It also has a well-preserved, dramatically sited group of three-deckers, especially gambrel-roof Colonial Revival examples. It is judged significant at the local level.","narrative":"Euclid Avenue and Montrose Street climb the steep western slope of Vernon Hill in Worcester, lined with three-decker houses built between about 1910 and 1930. The 4.5-acre district includes 40 residential buildings, a number of garages, and the sign and plaque marking Deedy Square. Twenty-seven of the three-deckers have gambrel roofs and thirteen have gable roofs, mostly in Colonial Revival forms with projecting porches, bay windows, arched openings and shingle or clapboard siding. The hillside setting gave residents views of the city, and streetcar service connected them to jobs. Early owners and tenants were largely Irish, with some Swedish families, and by 1930 Polish and Lithuanian families were also buying homes. Owners and tenants included laborers, carpenters, foremen, policemen and clerks. Although about eighteen buildings have been covered in modern siding, the grouping remains visually cohesive and is regarded as one of Worcester's outstanding three-decker landscapes.","period_of_significance":"1910-1930","architect_builder":"Contractor Thomas Foley built several houses in the area","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (three-deckers, mostly gambrel-roof; one Colonial Revival/Craftsman)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; general condition is fair to excellent. Eighteen three-deckers have lost individual integrity through modern siding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.624149-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7932/63793229/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002357.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002357/fe78154553-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002357/fe78154553-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Corner_of_Euclid_and_Vernon,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Corner_of_Euclid_and_Vernon,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793229","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclid_Avenue%E2%80%93Montrose_Street_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5406094"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/euclid-avenue-montrose-street-historic-district-89002357/"}
