They were designed by the locally prominent firm Barker and Nourse for developer Judson W. Hall and are cited as the first to meet the demand for modern apartment houses in downtown Worcester. They are significant under Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Two five-story brick apartment buildings, the Vendome and the St. Ives, face Chandler Street in southern downtown Worcester. Built around 1898 and divided by a common courtyard, they look almost identical, with buff to terracotta tapestry brick facades, copper-clad oriels, bracketed copper overhangs and sandstone lintels. The Boston-area style is an eclectic Classical Revival. The architectural firm Barker and Nourse designed them for Judson W. Hall, a local real estate agent who had owned the lot. Contemporary sources credited them as the first modern apartment houses in downtown Worcester. Tenants at the Vendome included editors, clerks, dressmakers and a watchmaker. Later occupancy became less prosperous and the buildings declined, but the apartment layouts survived. A rehabilitation from 1985 to 1987 kept original woodwork, claw-foot bathtubs, pocket doors, tile fireplace surrounds and an iron elevator enclosure. They are listed for architecture and for their role in the city's apartment development.","period_of_significance":"ca 1898-1939","architect_builder":"Barker, Albert A. & Nourse, Walter B.; Hall, Judson W.","architectural_style":"Late 19th Century Revival / Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated 1985-1987 and still used as multiple-unit residences, retaining original layouts and many interior details.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.597636-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7931/63793196/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89002331.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002331/edd9672684-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002331/edd9672684-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vendome_and_St._Ives_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vendome_and_St._Ives_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793196","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vendome_and_the_St._Ives","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7772153"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/vendome-the-and-the-st-ives-89002331/"}
