Its austere exterior and unpainted interior, including an elevated octagonal pulpit, are presented as embodying the spartan character of early Methodist worship and the denomination's 1821 building guidance.","narrative":"Built in 1822 as a 30 by 45 foot frame church on a knoll west of Burlington Borough, the two-story building has a forward-facing gable, a fieldstone foundation, clapboard walls and a metal roof. Its facade has twin doors with fanlights and pilasters, and its windows retain 12-over-12 sashes, many with original glass. The interior is largely original, with pine woodwork, wainscoting and horsehair plaster, and it has never been painted. Its dominant feature is a graceful elevated octagonal pulpit set within a half-circular alcove, reached by curving stairs with delicate balusters. The church replaced two earlier log structures on land set aside in 1794 by James McKean. Its austere design reflects early Methodist building principles, and its survival with little alteration makes it a rare example of the period in the region. A cemetery with late eighteenth to early twentieth century stones borders the church on the north and west.","period_of_significance":"1822","architect_builder":"William McKean (pulpit; reputed to have supervised construction)","architectural_style":"MID 19th Century - Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Document describes the church as a preserved building with a 1950 roof and late nineteenth-century porch, doors and shutters; current use is not stated.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:37.631442-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/89002280.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002280/afd199f07b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002280/afd199f07b-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burlington_ME_church_BradCo_PA_NRHP_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burlington_ME_church_BradCo_PA_NRHP_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998632","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methodist_Episcopal_Church_of_Burlington","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15253254"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/bradford-county/methodist-episcopal-church-of-burlington-89002280/"}
