It includes 63 contributing and 27 noncontributing resources.","why_significant":"The district contains the original limits of Garner's Station, incorporated in 1883, and the 1923 former Garner High School. It is significant under Criterion A as a representative linear railroad-generated town and for local development of public secondary education. The 1940 vocational building marked the town's last pre-World War II growth.","narrative":"Downtown Garner grew up along the North Carolina Railroad, and this district preserves the heart of that railroad town in Wake County. About ten blocks of brick storefronts, modest frame houses, two churches, a cemetery, a depot and a former high school line both sides of the tracks, with crape myrtles planted along the right of way tying the area together. Commercial buildings on Main Street include the ca. 1895 H. D. Rand Store, and houses range from Queen Anne and Classical Revival cottages to Craftsman bungalows of the 1920s and 30s. The ca. 1902 Garner Depot, damaged by a 1954 hurricane and moved away in the 1960s, was returned in 1987 for restoration. The district covers the original limits of Garner's Station, incorporated in 1883, and the two-story brick Garner High School of 1923, enlarged in 1927. Together they mark the town's growth as a railroad community and the spread of public secondary education before World War II.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1870-1940","architect_builder":"Bryan, Andrew, builder","architectural_style":"Queen Anne, Classical Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman, commercial vernacular","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"The Garner Depot, returned to its original location in 1987, was being restored at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:48.853359-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/7226/47722637/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89002157.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002157/2291ea4935-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002157/2291ea4935-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LikeGrantTookRichmond","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Downtown_Garner_Historic_District.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LikeGrantTookRichmond</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Downtown_Garner_Historic_District.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722637","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Garner_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20639046"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/downtown-garner-historic-district-89002157/"}
