It also represents the wholesale grocery trade that was central to Kinston's booming commercial economy in the first three decades of the century. Sumrell and McCoy was one of the first and largest such firms and operated for more than fifty years.","narrative":"Built in 1910 at the corner of North Queen and West Blount streets in Kinston, this brick building of about 30,000 square feet served as the home of the Sumrell and McCoy wholesale grocery company. It has two stories and a full basement, heavy post and beam construction in wood and steel, and a trapezoidal plan that follows its lot. The narrow Queen Street facade carries the most decoration, including a projecting gable, brick quoins, label moldings with cast-iron keystones, and prism glass transoms. A rear passageway once let wagons and later trucks pass through for unloading. George W. Sumrell and Henry H. McCoy founded the firm about 1900, and it later operated as H. H. McCoy Company until the mid 1950s. Hardware and building supply businesses later occupied the building. It is significant as a largely intact example of early 20th-century commercial architecture and as a reminder of Kinston's wholesale grocery trade. Recent plans call for conversion to an arts center.","period_of_significance":"1910-1939","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Commercial Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as standing vacant for several years, with many window openings boarded up; the Community Council for the Arts has purchased it and plans to renovate it as an arts center.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.143627-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/7181/47718151/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89002134.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002134/de61e4e4a0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002134/de61e4e4a0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sumrell_and_McCoy_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sumrell_and_McCoy_Building.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"94000569","name":"Kinston Commercial Historic District (Additional Documentation)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/kinston-commercial-historic-district-additional-documentation-94000569/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718151","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumrell_and_McCoy_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24041334"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lenoir-county/sumrell-and-mccoy-building-89002134/"}
