It was built in two sections, dating from 1912 and 1918.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the armory is significant under criteria A and C at the statewide level as a member of the State Armory Building property type in the Pennsylvania National Guard Armories multiple property nomination. It was built for the Sheridan Troop Cavalry in 1912 and is one of 15 Pennsylvania armories built for National Guard units with horses and one of 9 with an I plan. It is also one of at least 18 Pennsylvania armories designed by the W.G. Wilkins Company and Joseph F. Kuntz of Pittsburgh.","narrative":"Built of local Medina sandstone on a flat corner lot in Tyrone, the armory was erected in two stages, in 1912 and 1918, and follows the I-plan arrangement with an administration section, a drill hall and a stable. The administration block has a flat roof, while the drill hall and stable have shingled hip roofs. A pointed arch window sits above the centered main entrance, beneath a parapet that forms a pediment. Interiors include plaster walls, painted brick wainscoting and open roof trusses over the drill hall and stable. The building was designed for the Sheridan Troop Cavalry, a Pennsylvania National Guard unit that kept horses, and it contains typical military spaces such as a drill hall, classroom, kitchen and offices. Its significance lies in its association with the state's National Guard and in its design by firms active in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania armory construction. The interior plan remains largely intact, although glass block has replaced original windows.","period_of_significance":"1912-1939","architect_builder":"Wilkins, W.G. & Company; Berger, T.D. & Company; Wehr, E.A.","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:37.824134-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/89002083.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002083/26d55e28c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002083/26d55e28c1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tyrone_Armory_Apr_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tyrone_Armory_Apr_10.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"92001823","name":"Tyrone Borough Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/tyrone-borough-historic-district-92001823/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71992426","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrone_Armory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7861576"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/blair-county/tyrone-armory-89002083/"}
