It also reflects the early Huguenot settlement of the upper Wallkill Valley. The schoolhouse is individually significant as a representative one-room school and the earliest surviving schoolhouse in the Town of Gardiner.","narrative":"Along Route 208 in the Wallkill River Valley stands a stone farmhouse completed in 1772 by John A. LeFevre, a descendant of one of the twelve Huguenot families who settled New Paltz. The one-and-one-half story house began as two equal rooms with end-wall chimneys, and a third stone room was added before 1798. Later changes include an 1825 interior renovation and a nineteenth-century rear lean-to. Original hand-hewn beams, an early cellar stairway, a trapdoor and a hay mow door survive. Nearby, on land the LeFevre family donated in 1835, is a one-room clapboard schoolhouse that served the local district until 1932. It keeps its pressed-tin interior, wainscoting and original chalkboards, and is the oldest surviving schoolhouse in the Town of Gardiner. The house is valued as a representative Ulster County settlement-period stone dwelling and a record of dispersed Huguenot family farmsteads. The school illustrates early nineteenth-century local education. The farm setting remains open and rural.","period_of_significance":"1772 to 1835","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial / Dutch Colonial","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function listed as vacant/not in use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.105664-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89002023.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002023/f45aa29c5a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002023/f45aa29c5a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_A_Lafevre_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_A_Lafevre_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322657","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_A._Lafevre_House_and_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6217773"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/lafevre-john-a-house-and-school-89002023/"}
