It also reflects the history of Paddy Hill's Irish Catholic farming community, an unusually early rural Catholic congregation whose social life centered on the church.","narrative":"Our Mother of Sorrows church and cemetery occupy a small corner lot at Latta Road and Mount Read Boulevard in Paddy Hill, a former Irish farming community in the town of Greece, near Rochester. The red brick church, begun in 1859 and finished in 1878 when its tower and polychrome slate steeple were completed, uses round-arched openings, buff brick pilasters, corbelled cornices and a marble statue of the Virgin Mary set in a tower niche. Its interior has been converted into a library, though the original stained glass and cornice survive. The adjoining cemetery holds about 460 gravestones, mostly from the 1870s to 1890s, with weeping willow motifs and a granite cross marking the site of the first church. The property was listed for its architecture and funerary art, and for its link to relatively prosperous Irish Catholic settlers who built a self-supporting community centered on the parish. Local tradition credits Andrew Jackson Warner with the design.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1823-ca. 1939 (church: ca. 1859-1878)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival (form classification lists Federal)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The church interior was converted to an open-stack public lending library and heavily altered; the cemetery is in good repair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.205979-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/89002001.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002001/bbbe590468-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89002001/bbbe590468-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_Mother_of_Sorrows_(Greece,_NY)_from_SW_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Our_Mother_of_Sorrows_(Greece,_NY)_from_SW_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318896","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Mother_of_Sorrows_Roman_Catholic_Church_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7111098"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/our-mother-of-sorrows-roman-catholic-church-complex-89002001/"}
