It reflects the town's late 19th-century philanthropic institutions, having been founded under the will of Dr. Ebenezer Woodward to give girls an education equal to the boys' Adams Academy.","narrative":"Woodward Institute, at 1098 Hancock Street in Quincy Center, is a Queen Anne style school built in 1893-94 and enlarged in 1897. It exists because of Dr. Ebenezer Woodward, a physician who came to Quincy after graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1823. His 1869 will left an endowment, the Woodward Fund, to build a girls' school comparable to the Adams Academy for boys. The will required construction within 25 years and oversight by the selectmen and clergy. The clapboarded building has a residential look, unlike most other 19th-century Quincy schools, and it is the city's only surviving frame school building. It has a slate multiple-gable hip roof, hip-roofed dormers, grouped windows marking classrooms, and a recessed entrance with one-story Doric columns. The original six classrooms were joined in 1897 by six more, a gymnasium, library, reception room, study hall and offices. The building keeps its 1897 appearance and continues as a private girls' school.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"E. G.
