It was built in 1851-1852 and has a contributing 1930s frame garage.","why_significant":"The nomination argues for significance under criterion C as a good example of a regionally popular vernacular form in a rare one-story variant. It is the only one of five mid-nineteenth-century double-pile center-passage houses to be built with one story. It has mid- and late-nineteenth-century decorative features and 1930s repairs and landscaping that show how regional buildings changed over time.","narrative":"Built in 1851-1852 on the southwest edge of Blacksburg's original town squares, this one-story brick house follows a double-pile, center-passage plan under a hipped roof. The front is laid in Flemish bond, while the sides and rear use American bond. Its five-bay facade has a central entrance with transom and sidelights. A porch with sawn brackets and spindles was added in the late nineteenth century. John R. Phillips, a merchant and physician, likely built it, and the Ronald brothers, a banker-merchant and a lawyer, bought it in 1853. A. G. Smith, a horticulturist, acquired it in 1936, repaired it, added a second ell and a garage, and created the ornamental gardens. The house is significant as the only one-story example among five regional houses of its form, and it shows how buildings were adapted over time. Archaeological testing found a brick and limestone walkway behind the kitchen. The Town of Blacksburg bought the property in 1986.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850-1938","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: double-pile center-passage plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of Blacksburg since 1986, which plans to repair and keep the house and grounds as a community amenity; current function listed as work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.713392-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/6787/41678758/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001904.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001904/7652d675c2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001904/7652d675c2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kenneth Novy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ronald_Phillips_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth Novy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ronald_Phillips_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678758","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips%E2%80%93Ronald_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713056"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/phillips-ronald-house-89001904/"}
