The deed is dated 1856 and the building existed by 1864.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an unusually ornate and stylistically developed example of the nave-plan form popular in the New River Valley. It is also unusual for placing windows in the principal facade, and it has arched windows and paneled pilasters. It is larger and more elaborately detailed than comparable rural churches.","narrative":"Edgemont Church is a wood-frame country church near Christiansburg in Montgomery County, Virginia, built in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. It has a three-bay nave plan, a pedimented front, paneled corner pilasters with molded capitals, and segmentally arched openings. Six-over-six windows with arched heads and early louvered blinds light the building, and a circular louvered vent fills the pediment. A small belfry and modern additions were added later. A small graveyard to the north holds markers from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The congregation was organized by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a movement tied to Chester Bullard, who founded six churches in the region. A deed dates to 1856, and the building appears on an 1864 Confederate Engineers map. It was recognized for architecture because its scale, ornament and detailing exceed those of the many simpler nave-plan churches common in the New River Valley. It remains carefully maintained and keeps its overall form.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1860","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate (nave plan)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as carefully maintained and still in religious use, with a cemetery; additions to the west side and north end do not seriously affect its form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.147451-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/94/6787/41678794/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001902.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001902/7a54966f9b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001902/7a54966f9b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgemont_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgemont_Church.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678794","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgemont_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712271"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/edgemont-church-89001902/"}
