It was built about 1845 for members of the Kinzer family.","why_significant":"The house is a very well preserved example of a regionally popular two-room-plan house form with a pair of doors in a four-bay facade. The nearby brick kiln site was extensively tested archaeologically and is the only systematically investigated kiln in Montgomery County. The property is eligible under criteria A, C and D for architecture, industry and historic archaeology.","narrative":"Set on a hill above a branch of Tom's Creek west of Blacksburg, this two-story brick farmhouse was built around 1845 for the Kinzer family. Its east facade is laid in Flemish bond, with common bond on the sides and rear, splayed brick jack arches over the first-floor windows, a molded brick cornice and exterior chimneys at each end. Two doors in the central bays open into two equal rooms, a plan found in several houses of the region. Inside are large Greek Revival-style mantels and an enclosed stair. Tax records show building values on the farm rising sharply in the mid-1840s, which likely marks construction. About 400 feet south lies the remnant of a brick kiln, probably a temporary scove kiln used to make bricks for the house. Archaeological testing found fire-channel features and hand-molded bricks. The house is a well-preserved example of its type, and the kiln is the only systematically investigated one in Montgomery County.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1845","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th century: two-room-plan dwelling (with Greek Revival-style mantels)","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling. The brick kiln remnant is being affected by animal trampling and creek erosion.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.421737-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/6788/41678844/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001901.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001901/783c18188c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001901/783c18188c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Michael_Kinzer_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Michael_Kinzer_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678844","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Kinzer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712835"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/kinzer-michael-house-89001901/"}
