It was built about 1882 by an unknown builder.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant under criterion C as an unusual example of a popular regional form, the single-pile center-passage house. It is one of sixty-seven such late nineteenth-century frame houses in the county, and one of very few with board-and-batten siding. It shows the influence of pattern books and has been little altered.","narrative":"Near Childress in Montgomery County, Virginia, this two-story frame farmhouse dates to about 1882 and is also known as Catalpa Hall Farm. It has board-and-batten siding, a shallow slate roof, and a three-bay front with a central door flanked by sidelights. A gabled porch with paired two-story paneled columns shelters the entrance, and a second-floor balcony with a sawn balustrade sits above it. Brick chimneys stand at each end, and an integral two-story ell extends from the main block. Inside, an open-stringer stair rises in the center passage, with simple pilastered mantels in the flanking rooms. A small frame outbuilding and remnants of a boxwood garden remain on the grounds. The house is considered significant for its architecture. It is one of sixty-seven single-pile center-passage frame houses in the county from the late nineteenth century, yet one of very few clad in board-and-batten, a treatment promoted by pattern books for rural homes. It has changed little and remains in good condition.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1882","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Single-pile center-passage plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as well preserved, little altered and in good condition; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.517715-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/6788/41678810/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001898.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001898/9a08d58913-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001898/9a08d58913-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Hall_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_Hall_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678810","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Hall_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713338"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/hall-thomas-house-89001898/"}
