Franklin Street on the south side of the public square in Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. It incorporates parts of an earlier county clerk's office and was enlarged in the late nineteenth century.","why_significant":"The building is argued to be the county's best example of a late nineteenth-century law office. It also retains recognizable form and material elements of the early nineteenth-century county clerk's office. Its interior and exterior give the courthouse square a substantial late Victorian appearance.","narrative":"Facing the public square in Christiansburg, this three-story brick building at 2 S. Franklin Street grew out of the old Montgomery County clerk's office. The county sold it in 1858 to Walter Staples and John Wade, who received it in lieu of payment for building a new jail. Lawyers used it through the later nineteenth century, including the firms of Wade and Sullivan and Staples, Sullivan, and Cassel. In 1897 Archer A. Phlegar bought it and remodeled it extensively, adding a rear wing and a second story. The Italianate-style result has segmentally arched openings, a pressed metal cornice, a two-story front porch with turned posts and spindle frieze, and an open-stringer stair inside. Flemish-bond brickwork and early molded trim reveal the earlier structure. The Phlegar family held the building until the mid-twentieth century, when the county acquired it for government offices. It is recognized as the county's best surviving late nineteenth-century law office.","period_of_significance":"1860 ca. 1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used for county government offices since the mid-twentieth century; interior alterations by the county are stated not to have affected the significant plan and materials.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.755603-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/6788/41678838/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001892.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001892/b8b8956a25-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001892/b8b8956a25-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phlegar_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phlegar_Building.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"13000340","name":"Christiansburg Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/christiansburg-downtown-historic-district-13000340/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678838","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phlegar_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713057"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/phlegar-building-89001892/"}
