Its five-bay facade is unique among the county's log hall-parlor houses, which otherwise have three bays. Its late nineteenth-century conversion to a center-passage plan shows how a family adapted its home to changing needs.","narrative":"Set among twentieth-century farm buildings in rolling agricultural land west of Blacksburg, the Adam Wall House is a two-story log dwelling with a five-bay facade, weatherboard siding, brick end chimneys, and a two-story frame ell at the rear. It began as an unusually large hall-parlor house, measuring thirty-nine by twenty-three feet, and a partition added in the late nineteenth century created its center passage. Inside, a Federal period mantel with an elliptical sunburst tablet survives, along with beaded boards and an early enclosed winder stair. Family tradition links the Wall family to the site in the eighteenth century, but the present house appears to date from the second quarter of the nineteenth century, after Adam Wall bought the land in 1835. Of forty log hall-parlor houses recorded in the county in 1986, only ten dated from 1825-1860, and this is among the earliest and the largest. The house continues as part of a working dairy farm.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Hall-parlor plan (log), later altered to center-passage","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in the Wall family and is in active use as a dairy farm; recently rehabilitated, with the front porch enclosed and the west ell porch removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.48343-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/6787/41678776/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001891.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001891/63a53f9654-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001891/63a53f9654-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Wall_House_from_east.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adam_Wall_House_from_east.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678776","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Wall_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14711954"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/wall-adam-house-89001891/"}
