It has a store on the ground floor and an apartment above.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant under Criterion C as an unusually well-preserved example of a popular early twentieth-century commercial form. It reflects the commercial vitality of Vicker, which grew up along the railroad between Christiansburg and Radford. It is described as the best preserved of two surviving commercial buildings in the community.","narrative":"Built in 1910-11 by Edward Hornbarger, this two-story brick commercial building sits on the north side of Route 659 in Vicker, a railroad village that developed in the late nineteenth century between Christiansburg and Radford. It has a parapet shed roof, segmentally arched one-over-one windows, and wood bracketed cornices above the storefront and the three-bay second-floor facade. Inside, the store retains beaded tongue-and-groove ceiling and partition boards, reeded trim, and bull's-eye cornerblocks. The upper floor served as a residence, reached by a porch with turned posts and by concrete steps. Mid-twentieth-century additions were made at the rear and west side, and the storefront was altered for a garage door, though its transom and side windows remain. Outbuildings include a contributing board-and-batten hip-roofed structure. The store was listed for its architecture. Among more than fifty early twentieth-century commercial buildings surveyed, over half were brick, and this is the best preserved of two surviving in Vicker.","period_of_significance":"1910-11","architect_builder":"Edward Hornbarger (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Other: early 20th century commercial building","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as a single dwelling; the wood storefront was partially altered for a garage door, and mid-twentieth-century two-story additions were made to the rear and west side.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.967862-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/6787/41678762/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001888.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001888/583df4750c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001888/583df4750c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hornbarger_Store.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hornbarger_Store.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678762","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbarger_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712577"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/hornbarger-store-89001888/"}
