It is one of only four known examples of this form in Montgomery County. It has been carefully preserved, and additions respect its original form and detail.","narrative":"This two-story brick farmhouse sits on a hill in the valley of the North Fork of the Roanoke River, near New Ellett in Montgomery County. Built around 1840 on George Earhart's 537-acre farm, it has a Flemish-bond front, American-bond sides and rear, a corbeled brick cornice, and shouldered chimneys at each gable. Inside, a central brick partition divides the plan into two equal rooms, and the Federal-style mantels survive. A modern brick bath tower was added using specially made cornice bricks to match the original. The house is notable as a variation of the popular hall-parlor form with two equal-sized rooms, and it is one of only four known examples in the county. Tax records point to construction around 1839. In the 1880s the farm passed to Burgess Linkous and then to the county, which used it as a poor farm for about a decade before selling it in 1902. It remains a single-family dwelling and is well preserved.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: two-room plan (variation of the hall-parlor form)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; described as well maintained and preserving many original features.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.613624-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/6788/41678818/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001886.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001886/841f303cbc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001886/841f303cbc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Earhart_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Earhart_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678818","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Earhart_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712353"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/earhart-george-house-89001886/"}
