It has a two-room plan with a door into each room.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant under Criterion C as a well-preserved example of a rare two-room-plan variation of the hall-parlor house form. Only four brick two-room-plan houses from 1825-1900 were found in Montgomery County, and this is one of the two best preserved. Alterations were mostly to the rear and do not affect its visual integrity.","narrative":"Built in the 1830s on Giles Road northeast of Blacksburg's historic center, this two-story brick house has four bays and two similar rooms divided by a brick partition, with a door to each room. Exterior chimneys rise at each end. The front is laid in Flemish bond and has its early doors, original louvered blinds and a molded brick cornice. Inside are Federal-style mantels with sunburst tablets and nearly complete original paneled wainscot, some with painted graining uncovered by later owners. Tradition says the land was granted in 1800 and a log house was built first, later linked to the brick house by a corridor. John Keister owned the property in 1840, and it stayed in the family until a 1935 foreclosure. The log section was later demolished and a rear addition built in 1971. It was listed for architecture because it is a well-preserved example of a rare two-room form in Montgomery County, where only four brick examples were recorded for 1825-1900.","period_of_significance":"1830s","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th century: two-room-plan dwelling","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling, with a noncontributing mid-20th-century garage and a rear addition containing modern rooms.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.267651-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/6788/41678816/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001880.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001880/89e32f0716-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001880/89e32f0716-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keister_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keister_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678816","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keister_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712655"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/keister-house-89001880/"}
