The house was built in the mid-1850s, with a western addition made in 1875.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a well-preserved example of the regionally popular single-pile, center-passage house type, one of perhaps eight brick examples built between 1830 and 1865. It shows traditional planning along with pattern-book Greek Revival detailing typical of Montgomery County. The house and outbuildings are described as one of the county's best preserved farm seats.","narrative":"Walnut Spring is a large two-story brick house near Kanodes Mill, Montgomery County, Virginia, built in the mid-1850s on land Major James Randall Kent purchased in 1850 for his daughter Mary Louisa and her husband, Dr. James Hervey Otey. Its Flemish-bond front facade has three symmetrical bays, a sidelit entry and a Greek Revival porch. A long rear ell links a brick kitchen, a brick meathouse and a frame woodshed, and a two-story extension was added in 1875. Inside, the painted pine woodwork is simple Greek Revival, including pilastered mantels and preserved maple graining. Kent's memo of costs names the brickmaker, stonemason, carpenter and brickwork contractor. The house is significant as a well-preserved example of the single-pile, center-passage type, one of perhaps eight brick examples built in the county between 1830 and 1865. Little has changed since 1875, and the outbuildings make it one of the county's best preserved farm seats.","period_of_significance":"ca.1850-1875","architect_builder":"Alexander, Brickmason; Morris (?), Carpenter","architectural_style":"Greek Revival; single-pile, center-passage plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in an excellent state of preservation, carefully restored and maintained, and still occupied as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.150105-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/6788/41678806/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001878.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001878/cc809915ca-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001878/cc809915ca-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walnut_Spring_from_north.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walnut_Spring_from_north.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678806","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walnut_Spring","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713491"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/walnut-spring-89001878/"}
