It contains about fourteen buildings and sites, dominated by the ca. 1850 Italianate John A. Avirett house and the 1896 Rodolph Duffy house.","why_significant":"The district is significant for its concentration of nineteenth-century turpentine production, commerce and residences associated with the community's distillers, merchants and professional men. The Avirett house is regarded as the most architecturally sophisticated ante-bellum house in Onslow County. The surviving buildings and their zoned layout around a semi-public greensward illustrate the community's mixed industrial, commercial and resort character.","narrative":"Catherine Lake is a small community of frame houses, stores and outbuildings on the south shore of a spring-fed pond in the pine woods of Onslow County. Its nineteenth-century character grew from turpentine distilling, which began at the lake around the 1840s under John A. Avirett, Sr. The district's centrepiece is the Avirett house, a T-plan Italianate dwelling of about 1850 with a circular stair, molded plasterwork and original interior colours. Nearby stand the Duffy house of 1896, a large late Victorian dwelling, and the Greek Revival Boggs house of about 1873. Stylish houses were built on the south side of a greensward, with stores on the north side, a pattern that survives in the historic core. The district reflects how distilling, merchandising and residence were combined at a small lakeside settlement.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850-ca. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate; Greek Revival; Other: late Victorian millwork","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The Avirett house was unoccupied and neglected in the mid-twentieth century and was restored from the 1970s by its present owner.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:40.865842-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7182/47718293/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89001853.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718293","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_Lake_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460891"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/onslow-county/catherine-lake-historic-district-89001853/"}
