The district includes the house, adjoining farm land and four noncontributing buildings.","why_significant":"The house combines local vernacular traditions described as now rare in Onslow County, including log construction, an earthfast wooden foundation and evidence of a former mud-and-stick chimney. The farm is presented as one of the best preserved nineteenth and early twentieth century Onslow County farms tied to naval stores production and agriculture.","narrative":"Built in 1885 by David Futral as a one-story saddle-notched log hall-parlor house on Juniper Branch, a headwater of Back Swamp in northwestern Onslow County, the dwelling was enlarged around 1906 by his son Amos Futral with a garret, side room, rear shed rooms and a semi-detached kitchen and dining room. The expanded house takes the form of a coastal plain cottage with a front engaged porch and rests on wooden blocks and posts. Its brick chimney was fired on the property, and the log section still shows a plate projection that likely supported an earlier mud-and-stick chimney. The farm lies in a landscape of fields, woodlots and garden plots that have changed little over time. Family members worked it through subsistence farming and turpentine gathering, and the surviving buildings are regarded as an unusually intact record of nineteenth and early twentieth century rural life in the county. Its log construction and earthfast foundation are presented as rare survivals of local building practice.","period_of_significance":"1885-1938","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Coastal plain cottage","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a residence by the widow of Carl Futral; a 1986 bathroom addition was made to the house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.368642-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/7182/47718281/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89001851.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718281","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futral_Family_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461883"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/onslow-county/futral-family-farm-89001851/"}
