It follows a familiar double-cell form and keeps its form and decorative elements. It is described as structurally sound.","narrative":"This small frame cottage near Piedmont, Virginia, dates to about 1889 and is the main survivor of the Crockett Springs resort. It has two rooms, four bays, weatherboard walls, a tin roof and brick piers. A central partition holds a chimney with bracketed mantels. Paired doors with transoms sit between six-over-six windows, and reeded trim and beveled rafter ends add decoration. Porches shelter the front and one end. Crockett Springs opened in 1889 under the Virginia Arsenic Bromide and Lithia Springs Company and advertised its waters as a remedy for skin diseases, rheumatism, kidney ailments and nervousness. It was the last of Montgomery County's major springs resorts to open and closed in 1939. The hotel is gone, leaving the cottage and a modern privy on land now part of a Methodist camp. The cottage was recognized for its architecture as a rare example of late nineteenth-century resort design in the county. It has not been used for decades but remains sound.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1889","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"OTHER: double-cell cottage","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in reasonably good condition and structurally sound, but not used for several decades; the site is now part of a Methodist-operated camp.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.711187-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/6787/41678749/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001814.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001814/445d1b0566-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001814/445d1b0566-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crockett_Springs_Cottage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crockett_Springs_Cottage.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678749","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crockett_Springs_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712213"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/crockett-springs-cottage-89001814/"}
