Of fourteen late nineteenth-century houses of this plan in the county, only this one is a one-story version. It also has unusually elaborate exterior and interior decoration, a bank-sited setting on a steep bluff, and remains in excellent condition with most original features intact.","narrative":"Perched on the crest of a bluff above the Little River near Graysontown, this brick house was built about 1890 by Dr. William Bishop. It is built into the hillside, so it reads as one story from the land side and two stories toward the river. A flat-topped, hipped standing-seam metal roof covers walls laid in six-course American bond, and pedimented porches shelter the center bays of the east and west fronts, the east one with turned posts and a spindle frieze. Inside, large rooms flank a central passage, and the unpainted pine trim carries walnut moldings. A buggy house of the same period stands nearby. The house was listed for its architecture. Only one late nineteenth-century house in the county was found with a one-story, double-pile center-passage plan, and this one combines that rare form with unusually elaborate decoration and a dramatic bluff setting. Minor changes to the lower floor have not harmed its character.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by a Dr. William Bishop, per the statement of significance)","architectural_style":"Other: double-pile center-passage plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition with most original features preserved; a kitchen and bath were recently added in the east half of the lower floor. Historic and current use is single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.007954-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/6787/41678751/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001812.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001812/3ddbd6cd23-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001812/3ddbd6cd23-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bishop_House_Graysontown_Virginia.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bishop_House_Graysontown_Virginia.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678751","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop_House_(Graysontown,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712030"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/bishop-house-89001812/"}
