It is described as the only known rustic springhouse to survive among the springs resorts of the Virginias. It qualifies under criteria A and C for its role in resort history and its unique rustic architecture.","narrative":"This octagonal, two-tier pavilion with a hip roof sits on a lawn behind a modern ranch house, on what was once the grounds of the Alleghany Springs resort south of Shawsville, Virginia. Rough cedar posts support the structure, and intertwined rhododendron branches and roots form brackets, railings and vaulted ceilings. The spring once rose in a central pit, now blocked, ringed by a wooden rail with two marble counters for serving water. Guests took the waters here twice or more daily. The resort operated from 1853 until it burned in 1904, and could hold almost 1,000 guests in the 1880s. The springhouse does not appear in 1888 photographs, so it was built between then and 1904. It is considered the only known rustic springhouse surviving among the springs resorts of the Virginias, and it remains in excellent condition although the surrounding grounds became a subdivision in the mid-twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: rustic","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; described as in excellent condition, with the spring blocked and the roof apex ornament somewhat decayed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.998026-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6788/41678850/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001807.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001807/75451590ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001807/75451590ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alleghany_Springs_Springhouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alleghany_Springs_Springhouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678850","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleghany_Springs_Springhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14711961"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/alleghany-springs-springhouse-89001807/"}
