It was built in the 1850s by Edwin J. Amiss.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under criterion C for architecture. The house combines pattern-book Greek Revival details with the regional double-pile center-passage plan. Its deep plastered frieze, porch and entry surround, and marble mantels are rare in the county, and its outbuildings are among the best groups of secondary domestic structures there.","narrative":"Set on about three acres at the head of a maple-lined avenue, this two-story, three-bay brick house was built in the 1850s by Edwin J. Amiss, a prominent Blacksburg merchant and landowner. It sits within a mid-twentieth-century subdivision southeast of downtown Blacksburg. The hip-roofed house is laid in Flemish bond and combines pattern-book Greek Revival details with a traditional double-pile, center-passage plan. Notable features include a one-story portico with paired fluted Ionic columns, a deep plastered brick frieze, a diamond-paned transom, and marble mantels with metal coal inserts. Surviving mid-century outbuildings include a brick kitchen, a two-story log house, and a log meat house. Colonel W. H. Palmer bought the property in 1870 after Amiss's land was sold. Later additions and modernization did not remove significant elements. The property was recognized for its sophisticated architecture and its nearly complete group of outbuildings, among the best in the county.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1856 - 1880","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; modernized and enlarged, with important exterior features preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.546717-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/6787/41678760/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001804.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001804/c930f5cdc7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001804/c930f5cdc7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kenneth Novy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amiss_Palmer_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth Novy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amiss_Palmer_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678760","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiss%E2%80%93Palmer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14711964"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/amiss-palmer-house-89001804/"}
