Its extraordinary state of preservation, inside and out, contrasts with similar small twentieth-century churches that were altered, abandoned or converted. It is also an important landmark amid commercial development along U.S. Route 460.","narrative":"This small Primitive Baptist church sits in a grove of trees on Virginia Route 624 near Merrimac, surrounded by commercial development along the road between Blacksburg and Christiansburg. Built in 1922 on a lot sold to the congregation for $1.00, it is a four-bay, weatherboarded nave-plan building with a stamped metal shingle roof, six-over-six windows, a central double door and a shed-roofed square apse. Inside, unpainted beaded tongue-and-groove sheathing, simple wooden pews and woodstoves remain. Behind the church stands a plain wooden preaching stand from about the same time, used for outdoor meetings. The property was listed for its architecture. Primitive Baptist congregations follow a principle of neither adding nor taking away, and that practice kept the building remarkably unaltered. Few similar small twentieth-century churches in the region have survived so intact. The congregation has dwindled in recent years and holds services only occasionally, but the church remains a recognized landmark along U.S. Route 460.","period_of_significance":"1922","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: nave plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a place of worship; the congregation has diminished and now holds services infrequently.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.499614-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/6787/41678788/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/89001803.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001803/4d65c30249-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001803/4d65c30249-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Skye Marthaler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montgomery_Primitive_Baptist_Church_-_Merrimac.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Skye Marthaler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montgomery_Primitive_Baptist_Church_-_Merrimac.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678788","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgomery_Primitive_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712881"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/montgomery-primitive-baptist-church-89001803/"}
