It was built in 1857-58 for the Kinston Baptist Church and has been the home of White Rock Presbyterian Church since 1901.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is the earliest surviving religious building in Kinston and one of a small number of antebellum buildings in the city. It is presented as a largely intact and handsome example of mid-19th century Greek Revival design, with a distyle in antis portico and a remaining steeple stage. Its present site and neighborhood are also said to recall its earlier residential locations.","narrative":"Built in 1857-58 for the Kinston Baptist Church, this frame temple-form church stands on the northwest corner of Thompson and Tiffany streets in northeast Kinston. It was dedicated in January 1858 and is a rectangular weatherboarded building with a distyle in antis portico, fluted square columns, and a pedimented front gable roof of standing-seam tin. A square tower with louvered stage rises at the entrance end. The interior retains beaded tongue-and-groove ceilings, a wide wainscot, and three ranks of original box pews. In 1901 the building was moved to its present lot and bought by a black Presbyterian congregation, White Rock Church, which has worshipped there since. The church is regarded as one of the few surviving antebellum buildings in Kinston and as one of the city's best examples of Greek Revival architecture. Its builder is unidentified, and the design resembles a Goldsboro church of 1856, which suggests the influence of pattern books.","period_of_significance":"1858-ca. 1891","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Largely intact; the 1956 fire destroyed the original stained glass windows and replacement windows and lanterns were installed.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.096975-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/7181/47718165/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89001773.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001773/690a8913e2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001773/690a8913e2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kinston_Baptist-White_Rock_Presbyterian_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kinston_Baptist-White_Rock_Presbyterian_Church.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718165","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinston_Baptist-White_Rock_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6414313"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lenoir-county/kinston-baptist-white-rock-presbyterian-church-89001773/"}
