It is also closely tied to B. W. Canady, a hardware merchant, investor, banker, alderman and two-term mayor who helped drive the town's growth as a tobacco and cotton center.","narrative":"This two-story Italianate frame house stands at the corner of North Queen Street and West Washington Avenue, just north of downtown Kinston, North Carolina. Built about 1883-84 for Burwell Westbrook Canady, it has a gabled projecting central entrance bay, pendant eaves brackets, a dentilled cornice, pedimented window surrounds, tall paneled chimneys and ornate pierced attic vents. Inside, the original Italianate mantels survive upstairs, while the main first-floor rooms were remodeled in Colonial Revival style in the early twentieth century. Once one of many substantial residences along Queen Street, it is now a rare survivor, and its lot has been reduced and surrounded by later commercial buildings. Canady was a hardware merchant who invested in a knitting mill, a railroad, a bank and a tobacco warehouse, and who served as mayor and alderman. His family lived in the house for about ninety years. It is regarded as the town's finest surviving late Italianate residence.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1883-1905","architect_builder":"Canady, Burwell Westbrook (listed as significant person); architect/builder unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as work in progress; the text says the current owner is rehabilitating the house.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.032427-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/7181/47718169/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/89001771.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001771/9fac87c7b3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001771/9fac87c7b3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B._W._Canady_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B._W._Canady_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718169","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B._W._Canady_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460793"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lenoir-county/canady-b-w-house-89001771/"}
