It preserves typical small-town commercial buildings of brick and cast-concrete block, plus a cruciform church with English country church references. Bricks and blocks were made locally by the Demorest Brick Works.","narrative":"Downtown Demorest, in northeast Georgia, is preserved in a small district of seven historic buildings clustered near Central Avenue and Georgia Street. Six are commercial buildings, mostly brick and cast-concrete block, built between 1890 and 1934. They include the 1890 Brick Block, the 1901 Odd Fellows lodge, an 1893 wood-framed store that is the town's only surviving example of that construction, and a Methodist-Congregational church built in 1908 of rusticated cast-concrete blocks. The district matters because it is what remains of the business center of a planned temperance town, laid out in 1889 by the Demorest Home, Mining, and Improvement Company. Fire and demolition removed many early buildings, especially on the south side of Georgia Street. The surviving storefronts show simple commercial design with display windows and corbeled brick cornices. Local bricks and blocks came from the Demorest Brick Works. The church, designed and built by H. W. Willett, has a cross plan and corner tower.","period_of_significance":"1889-1934","architect_builder":"Willett, H.
