Byam. The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is a well-detailed example of the Queen Anne style and part of Crescent Street's group of well-crafted Queen Anne houses. It also represents the development of Waltham's South Side by the watch company, which housed its upper-level employees there. It meets criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built between about 1883 and 1886, this Queen Anne house at 337 Crescent Street in Waltham was home to Charles C. Byam, a skilled watch-machinery worker who rose from assistant foreman to foreman of the American Waltham Watch Company's escapement department. Members of the Byam family owned it until at least the late 1920s. The house sits on land bought by the Waltham Improvement Company in 1854 and later developed with restrictive covenants, which gave the area a residential character. It is a compact, roughly rectangular, clapboard-sided building with a projecting center pavilion, a front porch with Chinese fretwork railings, turned posts and curved brackets, a one-story oriel topped by an open porch, and a slate-shingled hip roof. A double window with a pointed-arch attic window above appears to be the unidentified builder's signature. The house is in good condition, unaltered, and overlooks the Charles River. It was listed for its architecture and its link to the watch company's growth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; house-builder not yet identified","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Private residence in good condition with no major alterations; a non-contributing garage is on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.573587-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7918/63791821/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001576.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001576/9500911d99-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001576/9500911d99-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_Charles_Byam_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_Charles_Byam_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791821","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Byam_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715432"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/byam-charles-house-89001576/"}
