It was originally a residence and is now used professionally.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the very few surviving Georgian houses in Waltham and the last remnant of the small village center that existed at Main Street and Beaver Brook around 1800. It is cited under criteria A and C, with integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Standing at 411 Main Street in Waltham, this clapboard house dates to 1795 and is among the few Georgian houses left in the city. It has a five-by-two bay profile, two ridge chimneys, a molded front cornice, cornice-headed first-floor windows, and a pedimented entry with modillions, Doric pilasters and a narrow six-pane transom. The windows still hold original 6/9 double-hung sash. Deed research supports the tradition that Samuel Hager, a Watertown farmer, built the house and sold it in 1796 to Stephen Mead, a Charlestown blacksmith. The land earlier held a blacksmith shop, and a wheelwright's shop once stood east of the house. The Mead family kept the property until the mid-nineteenth century. Later owners included land developer James H. Ellison and real estate agent Frederic I. Robinson, both of whom rented it out. Surrounded by twentieth-century housing on a busy road, it is the last remnant of the early village center near Beaver Brook, which is why it was listed.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; traditionally built by Samuel Hager","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; no major alterations, not moved, no outbuildings; present use is professional.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.332795-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/7916/63791664/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001572.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001572/bc29cac126-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001572/bc29cac126-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hager-Mead_House_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hager-Mead_House_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791664","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hager%E2%80%93Mead_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5638613"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hager-mead-house-89001572/"}
