It is now multi-family housing.","why_significant":"It is one of only four surviving temple-front Greek Revival houses in Waltham, and its Greek detailing is considered the most correct of the four. It also illustrates the mid-to-late 19th century development of the central Main Street area as a home for workers, small businessmen and factory owners.","narrative":"This two-and-a-half-story house at 44 Harvard Street in Waltham is a temple-front Greek Revival building, one of only four of its type surviving in the city. It was built before 1852 on Charles Street, then called Brown's Lane at its Harvard Street end. Francis Buttrick acquired lots on both streets in 1863 and 1864 and apparently moved the house around the corner to its present site. It appears always to have been a rental property, home to tenants such as a milkman, a painter, a produce dealer and a peddler. Its features include a pedimented attic, full entablature, a two-story portico of fluted Doric columns (one now missing), full-length windows and pedimented window heads and door surround. Wood shingle siding was added in the early twentieth century. An Italianate barn at the rear has become a residence. The house is valued for its architecture and for showing how this neighborhood developed to house workers and small businessmen.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (temple-front)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as fair; the building is in present use as multi-family residential, and the rear barn has been converted to a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.981492-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7916/63791696/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001566.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001566/26f5c4860f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001566/26f5c4860f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francis_Buttrick_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francis_Buttrick_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791696","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Buttrick_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5480387"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/buttrick-francis-house-89001566/"}
