It keeps its original features and finishes, and it also occupies the site of an early Sanderson family homestead.","narrative":"Built in 1894 at 428 Lexington Street in Waltham, this Queen Anne house sits on a busy corner in the Piety Corner area, among large nineteenth and early twentieth century homes. It is considered the most elaborate and best-preserved Queen Anne house in the neighborhood and one of the finest in the city. Original features survive, including an octagonal tower with arched windows and butted shingles, fishscale shingles on a three-sided bay, curved brackets under the cornice, bull's-eye windows, fluted porch posts and a molded eyebrow roof on the porch. Lively turrets, cross-gables and porches disguise its boxy hip-roof form. The site carries earlier history: Deacon Jonathan Sanderson Sr., an early settler, built a house nearby in 1689, and the Sanderson homestead stood here until Fannie M. Johnson, wife of dentist Newell D. Johnson, bought the property in 1893. The Johnsons took down the old house and built the present one in 1894.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as good, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.300979-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/94/7911/63791194/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001564.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001564/0cc59fe7c6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001564/0cc59fe7c6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newell_D_Johnson_House,_Waltham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newell_D_Johnson_House,_Waltham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791194","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newell_D._Johnson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7017695"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/johnson-newell-d-house-89001564/"}
