Its well documented succession of owners illustrates how the north central Main Street area developed in the mid-19th century as a home for workers and small businessmen.","narrative":"Set on Liberty Street in Waltham, this clapboard house rises two and a half stories to a gable roof and shows the Greek Revival style in a modest, vernacular form. Built probably in 1846 or 1847, it has a side-wall plan with a symmetrical five-bay facade, a double entry, original 6/6 sash windows, a pedimented attic, a plain entablature, cornerboards, a brick foundation and a full porch with fluted Doric columns. The north bay, the porch balustrade and the long west ell are likely later additions. Marshall Smith, a chair and harness maker, probably built it and owned it for about a year. Later owners included Stephen Stone, whose debts led to an auction, and Phebe Foster, a widow who acquired it in 1865; the Foster family stayed until about 1912. Patrick J. Healy, a teamster, then bought it. The house is valued as one of few of its type in the city and as evidence of how this area housed workers and small businessmen in the mid-19th century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; probably built by Marshall Smith","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is listed as fair-good. A bay window on the north was added at an undated time, and a non-contributing garage stands on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.180996-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7917/63791724/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001560.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001560/91932e7953-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001560/91932e7953-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_MarshallSmithHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_MarshallSmithHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791724","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Smith_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6773773"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/smith-marshall-house-89001560/"}
