The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of Waltham's finest transitional Greek Revival/Italianate houses and one of the best examples of the type in the city. It also illustrates the mid-19th century development of Piety Corner as a fashionable residential neighborhood and is associated with a prominent local family. It is argued to meet criteria A and C.","narrative":"Set back from a winding street on a large, landscaped lot at 46 Lincoln Street in Waltham, this L-shaped clapboard house combines Italianate and Greek Revival details. Perez Smith built it around 1851, a date inferred from his use of the replaced Pond End Schoolhouse as a tool shed during construction. He had bought 22 acres of former Sanderson land in 1846 and farmed it. The main block has a symmetrical three-bay facade, a center entrance with sidelights and a narrow transom, heavy Doric-style corner pilasts, a deep bracketed cornice, and round-arched attic windows. Windows have cornice-headed lintels and 6/6 sash. Rear ells of two stories and one story extend behind the main block. The house is listed as one of the best examples of its type in the city and as evidence of Piety Corner's growth as a fashionable residential area. Smith's son Edward P. Smith, a local bank president and public official, inherited the property and owned it until 1935.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Perez Smith (builder); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate (transitional Greek Revival/Italianate)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is described as excellent, with large rear ells of undated construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.916225-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7917/63791773/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001558.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001558/19a1cbc833-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001558/19a1cbc833-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Perez_Smith_House,_Waltham_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Perez_Smith_House,_Waltham_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791773","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perez_Smith_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7167917"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/smith-perez-house-89001558/"}
