It is a late Italianate vernacular building and is still in residential use.","why_significant":"The block is an uncommon, clearly recognizable form of company workers' housing from the Boston Manufacturing Company's 1880s expansion. It reinforces River Street's 19th-century character as the corridor linking the main mills and the bleachery. It is part of Waltham's notable collection of workers' housing and descends from the earlier Long Block on Waltham Common.","narrative":"Along River Street in Waltham, a long two-story rowhouse block at numbers 380-410 recalls the era when the Boston Manufacturing Company housed its own workers. Built around 1881-1886 during the company's 1880s expansion, the wood-frame building rises from a full basement to a gable roof. It is divided into four-bay segments with paired entries and paired stove chimneys. The western end has bracketed hoods over the doors and permastone siding, while the eastern end has open porches with turned posts and vinyl clapboards. Windows hold 2/2 wood sash. The block stands between the company's main mills and its bleachery, where the company had been building housing since the 1820s. Rowhouses of this kind are uncommon, and most of the surrounding housing has lost its recognizable form. The block descends from the Long Block that stood by Waltham Common from 1816 until the late 1880s. Only one similar block, dated 1889, survives at Lawton Place. The building remains in residential use and in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Boston Manufacturing Company (builder/owner); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Late Italianate vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residential; condition is good, with artificial siding added in the 1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.51461-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/7922/63792252/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001534.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001534/ed4ddfe0c2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001534/ed4ddfe0c2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_BMC_Housing_380_River.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_MA_BMC_Housing_380_River.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792252","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Manufacturing_Company_Housing","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4947973"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/boston-manufacturing-company-housing-89001534/"}
