Thomas Hill, minister of the First Parish Church. It is an early Italianate house with Greek Revival elements, set far back on a large lawn.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a good example of an early Italianate house with Greek Revival features. It is also the Waltham property most closely tied to Rev. Thomas Hill, a prominent nineteenth century citizen who owned it from 1845 until his death in 1891. It is cited under criteria B and C.","narrative":"Set far back on a broad lawn in a residential part of Waltham, this 1845 house at 132 Church Street combines Italianate and Greek Revival details. Its three-by-two bay form, center entrance, bracketed eaves, roundhead gable windows and bracketed window canopies are Italianate, while the pedimented attic, full entablature and sidelit entrance reflect the earlier Greek Revival style. A large north ell and an early twentieth century glazed sunporch and front veranda were added later. The house was built by Thomas Hill, newly appointed minister of the First Parish Church, who served on the Waltham School Committee from 1845 to 1859, later led Antioch College and then Harvard College, and invented a calculating device called an arithmometer. He owned the house until his death in 1891, and it is the Waltham property most closely linked to his life. Its architecture and its association with Hill support its listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by Thomas Hill","architectural_style":"Greek Revival/Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; in residential use, with a non-contributing garage, a sunporch and rear ells added later.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.175572-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/7919/63791951/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001528.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001528/cd9079b1d6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001528/cd9079b1d6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_RevThomasHillHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_RevThomasHillHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791951","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev._Thomas_Hill_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715826"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hill-rev-thomas-house-89001528/"}
