The commercial blocks reflect post-Civil War industrial prosperity, and the public buildings reflect Waltham's incorporation as a city in 1884. It also holds four commercial and municipal buildings by architect Henry W. Hartwell, spanning fifty years.","narrative":"Central Square is the commercial and civic heart of Waltham, Massachusetts, a 6.34-acre district organized around the 2.39-acre town common. Its 23 resources include commercial blocks, a city hall, police and fire buildings, a fire alarm headquarters, an obelisk and bronze statues. Development grew out of the Boston Manufacturing Company, founded in 1813, which gave land for the common and built Rumford Hall in 1827. The arrival of the railroad in 1843 and the Moody Street bridge in 1847 encouraged growth. The blocks date from 1856 to the 1930s in Italianate, High Victorian Gothic, Queen Anne and Georgian Revival styles. Four buildings were designed by Henry W. Hartwell over fifty years, including the Central Block of 1856 and the Music Hall of 1880. Municipal buildings followed Waltham's incorporation as a city in 1884, ending with the City Hall of 1924-26. Some buildings have been demolished or altered, yet the district keeps a recognizable sense of place.","period_of_significance":"1850-1938","architect_builder":"Henry W.
