It has some of the most elaborate and best preserved patterned shinglework in Waltham. It was also part of one of the city's first suburban developments, laid out by builder Charles Harrington.","narrative":"Located at 209 Linden Street in Waltham, this house began in 1846 as a high-style Greek Revival residence built by Charles Harrington for Peter Dunbar. Harrington, a Bleachery worker who was also one of the city's important nineteenth-century builders, laid out half of Linden Street and built three houses there, creating one of Waltham's first suburban developments. In 1892 oil merchant Joseph R. Stearns completely remodeled the house in the Queen Anne style. He added a round tower with a bell-shaped roof and a decorated porch, and covered the walls with patterned shingles in scallop, spade and jagged-flame shapes. Around 1915 the house was moved forward on its lot, and its two rear ells became separate homes on Linden Terrace. Greek Revival traces survive at the rear. The house was recognized for its architecture, especially the shinglework, as a notable local example of Queen Anne design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Charles Harrington","architectural_style":"Greek Revival/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.216879-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7917/63791740/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/89001517.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001517/0cd4fce340-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/89001517/0cd4fce340-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_DunbarStearnsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WalthamMA_DunbarStearnsHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791740","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%E2%80%93Stearns_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5314180"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/dunbar-stearns-house-89001517/"}
